The CBSO celebrates the golden age of Viennese waltzes with Johann Strauss II, conducted by Tess Jackson and featuring soprano Aylish Tynan.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are taking over Symphony Hall on Sunday 3 January 2027 for Viennese New Year, a concert that puts the golden age of the Viennese waltz front and centre. It's a matinee, starting at 3:00pm, and it's one of the early dates in the CBSO's 2026-27 season.
Johann Strauss II, the 'Waltz King', is the heart of the programme, so you'll be hearing plenty of his work. Alongside the waltzes, they're playing the overture to Die Fledermaus and the polka Unter Donner und Blitz ('Thunder and Lightning'), which is a bit more on the lively side. Soprano Ailish Tynan joins in, with Peter How supporting her appearance. The whole thing is conducted by Tess Jackson.
It's a fairly substantial afternoon: the concert runs for about two hours, with a twenty-minute interval to stretch your legs. The programme sits within the CBSO's wider 2026-27 season, which Music Director Kazuki Yamada has built around a mix of major symphonic journeys, soloists and conductors, new commissions, and international touring. That season spans orchestral masterpieces and epic film scores, pop music, family favourites, and cross-genre collaborations, so this is one of the more traditional, waltz-focused afternoons in the calendar.
