The CBSO perform Bruckner's 7th Symphony with Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No.1, led by Ilan Volkov with Ilya Gringolts on violin.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are at Symphony Hall on Tuesday 3 November, with Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 as the main event. It's a big night for the CBSO, as it marks Ilan Volkov's first concert as their new Principal Guest Conductor. Volkov is known as much for his Bruckner as for the wider repertoire he takes on, so this is a fitting place to start.
The Seventh is one of Bruckner's finest, noble in its construction and with a touching tribute to Wagner at its centre. It's a long, expansive piece of music, and it takes up the bulk of the evening. Before that, the orchestra will perform Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, with Ilya Gringolts on the solo part. Gringolts has been widely acclaimed for his Prokofiev, and reviewers have described it as sensational and downright romantic, especially the dreamy opening movement.
The whole thing runs about two hours, with a 20-minute interval. If you're arriving early, there's a pre-concert performance by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra to fill the early evening. The night is generously supported by Jerry Sykes.
