A creative workshop where participants make their own upcycled sari bell garland with Priya Velusami of Pri Pri.
Priya Velusami of Pri Pri is running an upcycled sari bell garland workshop at the Ikon Gallery on Saturday 14 November, and it's one of those things that's as much about where the materials come from as what you actually make. The session is held at the Ikon Shop, inside the gallery at 1 Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, B1 2HS.
Over the course of the workshop, you'll make your own bell garland using reclaimed sari offcuts — the leftover scraps from textiles that would otherwise end up in landfill. The whole thing is about giving those pieces a second life rather than letting them go to waste. If you've never worked with saris before, it's a good place to start: they're known for their bright colours and distinct textures, so you'll end up with something quite vivid.
There's a bit of a story behind it, too. Pri Pri makes a collection of handmade accessories and homewares from upcycled saris, a business Velusami says was inspired by childhood memories of sewing with her resourceful grandmother. Beyond the making, the business supports a charity in India that empowers women through tailoring training and skills development, so the work reaches further than just the garland you take home.

There are two sessions to choose from on the day: one from 11.00am to 12.15pm and another from 1.00pm to 3.30pm. Both are £30, and booking is essential, so you'll need to get your name down in advance rather than just turning up on the day.
