Contemporary dance piece Threesome by Wojciech Grudzinski, exploring queer history and legacy, presented as part of the THIS IS DANCE season.
Wojciech Grudzinski brings Threesome to the Midlands Arts Centre's Foyle Studio on Wednesday 14 October and Thursday 15 October. It's a contemporary dance piece that works its way through queer Polish history, and it's coming to Birmingham as part of THIS IS DANCE, the international dance season run by the MAC in partnership with the Hippodrome, the Rep, Fabric, Fierce Festival, and Sampad Arts.
In Threesome, Grudzinski shares the stage with spectral figures from the past: three legendary Polish dancers, Stanisław Szymański, Wojciech Wiesiołłowski, and Gerard Wilk. All three grew up in post-war, communist Poland; two eventually emigrated, while one stayed. The work is described as a phantasmagoric, posthumous ballet that seeks to dispel myths and rediscover their individual queer experiences. It's an intensely physical excavation of that history, and the critic Fierce put it as 'dripping in sweat, sex and memory'.
Grudzinski developed the piece as an artist-in-residence at the Cité internationale des arts x CN D in Paris, and it won the Polityka Passport Award in the Stage category in 2025. It's presented here as part of the Fierce Festival, which sits within the wider THIS IS DANCE season. The season brings together a range of dance work across the city's main venues, with the MAC hosting this particular run.
