Live folk music performance by The Grace Smith Trio, an innovative instrumental trio blending traditional and contemporary melodies.
The Grace Smith Trio play The Kitchen Garden in Kings Heath on Sunday 7 March, with the music starting at 7:30pm. It's a three-piece folk outfit that draws on tradition while adding its own melodies to the mix.
The line-up is Grace Smith on fiddle and viola, Sam Partridge on concertina, and Tom Kimber on mandolin. That combination of fiddle, concertina, and mandolin is a classic folk pairing, and the set will be built around those three instruments working together. The trio describes their approach as an innovative take on folk that draws deeply from tradition while adding new melodies of its own.
Their debut album, Overleaf, came out in autumn 2023 and picked up some strong reviews. Klof Mag called it 'the exciting future of instrumental folk music', and that record will be a good place to get a feel for what they do before you see them live. If you're not familiar with them, it's worth a listen first.
