Improvisation concert featuring Camila Nebbia, John Edwards and Mark Sanders, with support from Ollie Talbot and Vato Klemera.
Camila Nebbia plays the Midlands Arts Centre on Thursday 22 October, performing A series of etudes mostly written down with bassist John Edwards and drummer Mark Sanders. It's an improvisation concert, and the title gives you a good sense of where it sits: there's a written framework to work from, but the actual playing happens in the moment.
Nebbia is an Argentinian saxophonist based in Berlin, and she's become a regular on the adventurous European improvisation scene. She's played alongside Kit Downes, Chris Corsano and Marilyn Crispell, so she's well-versed in the kind of music that doesn't stay in one place for long. For this one, she's teaming up with two of the UK's top improvisers: John Edwards on double bass and Mark Sanders on drums. It's a saxophone trio, and with the etudes as a starting point, the night will be about how they build on those ideas together.
There's a support act too, and it's a local one. Ollie Talbot on drums and Vato Klemera on piano open the evening. They're both young Birmingham-based players, and the two of them were spotted by the main act at a recent gig at the Conservatoire, so they've got a direct link to the headliners. Between them, that's one saxophonist, one pianist and two drummers on one bill.
