Concert of Icelandic troubadour and storyteller Svavar Knútur, blending folk, blues and world music with storytelling.
Svavar Knútur plays Kitchen Garden on Tuesday 24 November, a night of folk, blues and world music from the Icelandic troubadour and storyteller. He's from the rugged north of Iceland and has spent his career exploring the human condition through the lens of his country's dark and often tragic history, leaning on its unique melodies and narrative style.
He draws from a wide range of influences, three of which he names as governing: Nick Drake, Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) and Kris Kristofferson, alongside Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell and Nick Cave. He describes himself as a 'Public Health Troubadour' and 'the broccoli of SingerSongwriters. Not the sexiest of the vegetables but veeeery good for you!'. The Australian musician and blogger Pete Uhlenbruch wrote that 'a night with Svavar will bring you to hell and back, and you'll be smiling and laughing all the way.'
