Folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span, led by Ashley Hutchings and Maddy Prior, play live in Town Hall with their new album 'Conflict'.
Steeleye Span play Birmingham Town Hall on Saturday 31 October, part of their autumn tour. They're touring Conflict, their first full studio album in over five years, and the set pulls from it alongside the older songs. On the record, the traditional singers perform modern and self-composed pieces next to old songs; they say the title reflects the times we find ourselves in as well as our strained relationship with the planet.
If you're not familiar with them, they're one of the longest-lived folk rock bands of their era, together for 57 years. They formed in 1969 out of Fairport Convention and the ashes of Sweeney's Men, and built a distinctive fusion of British folk and electric rock. The early years were led by ex-Fairport bassist Ashley Hutchings and built around two pairs of vocalists: Tim Hart and Maddy Prior alongside Terry and Gay Woods. Their 1970 album Please to See the King is regarded as their most admired record, followed by Ten Man Mop in 1971.

When Hutchings and Martin Carthy left to form The Albion Band, the more rock-oriented line-up with Rick Kemp and Bob Johnson delivered the band's most commercially successful phase, with hits like 'Gaudete' and 'All Around My Hat' (1975) and a certified gold record. They're still together now, and Conflict marks their first full studio album in more than five years. The show starts at 7:30 PM, and tickets are £30.50 to £38.50.
