Live folk concert by Ríoghnach Connolly and Honeyfeet, with brass, at The Kitchen Garden in Kings Heath.
Ríoghnach Connolly & Honeyfeet play The Kitchen Garden on Sunday 22 November, with the music starting at 8:00 pm and doors open from 7:30 pm. It's a full-band set, with Connolly leading a six-piece that brings together swampy jazz, raucous brass, fractured funk, blues balladry and folkloric textures.
Connolly herself has a fair bit of folk pedigree behind her: she's won the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Award for Best Folk Singer and BBC Radio 2's Folk Singer of the Year. Earlier this year, she joined Annie Lennox on stage at the Royal Albert Hall for Sisters: Annie Lennox and Friends. The band has been on a steady rise since then, with their They Want What You've Got tour taking them to The Glasshouse in Gateshead, the Albert Hall in Manchester as part of WOMEX 24 and the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. This is a proper band night, not a solo turn, and the line-up reflects that: Lorien Garth Edwards on bass, Ellis Davies on guitar, John Ellis on keyboards, Biff Roxby on brass and Phill Howley on drums. Between the brass and the keyboards, there's plenty of room for the jazz and funk side of things to come through, and the bass and drums keep it grounded in the blues. It's a big sound for a Sunday night in Kings Heath.
