Drop-in concert blending Indian classical traditions with Western contemporary music by RBC India Assemble.
RBC India Assemble bring their project Rhythms of India to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Tuesday 8 December. It's a drop-in session, so you can pop in and out as you please rather than committing to a fixed start and end time.
The music sits right where the title suggests: it's a blend of Indian classical traditions and Western contemporary music. If you're familiar with the two, you've got a good idea of the ground they're covering. The classical side brings the ragas and the rhythmic cycles that define the tradition, while the contemporary side pulls in the sounds and structures of the West. When they meet, it's less of a collision and more of a conversation, with the two styles working together rather than competing for space.
Because it's a drop-in, it's an easy one to fit around your day. You don't have to worry about arriving exactly on time or staying until the end; you can just drift in when you're nearby and stay as long as you fancy. It's the kind of thing that works just as well as a quick stop as it does as a longer listen.
