Free reggae night with DJ Mikey D playing rub a dub, lovers rock and dancehall at Temper and Brown in the Jewellery Quarter.
Temper and Brown are hosting a reggae night at their venue in the Jewellery Quarter on Sunday 1 November, with DJ Mikey D on the decks. It's billed as a journey through the golden eras of reggae: deep, warm rub-a-dub grooves from the 1970s sliding into the two-tone and digital dancehall of the 1980s, before lifting up to the present day with a touch of Tarrus Riley soul and modern roots energy. They describe it as a laid-back, feel-good session of big basslines, lovers rock and conscious lyrics, with rum flowing in the venue's snug and cocktails all night.
Behind the decks is DJ Mikey D, a respected figure on the Coventry music scene whose career spans more than three decades of reggae, dancehall and sound system culture. He started as a box boy with the legendary Jah Tubbys sound, became a founding member of the influential Aba-Shanti-I sound system when he stepped behind the decks in the mid-90s, and has since run radio shows on Sting FM and Hillz FM and launched his own platform, Arawak Radio. It's a long pedigree to bring to the night, and the set reflects it, moving from the heavy roots of the seventies through to the dancehall of the eighties and into the modern era.
