Monthly book club session at Temper and Brown to discuss 'Carmilla' by Sheridan le Fanu, with a purchase in the venue required.
The Book Club JQ is back at Temper and Brown on Thursday 29 October, with the October session running from 6pm to 7pm. This month they're talking through Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu, the 1872 gothic novella that predates Dracula and shares a lot of its DNA — it's a story of a young woman in a remote castle and a mysterious guest who turns out to be a vampire, and it's a great one to pick apart if you fancy a bit of classic horror as the nights draw in.
If you haven't come across them before, The Book Club JQ is a monthly thing they run at Temper and Brown, and each meeting centres on a different book. It's a straightforward setup: everyone reads the same title, and the hour is spent chatting about it with a group of other readers. It's less about formal analysis and more about getting a few different takes on the same story, so it works whether you've spent weeks chewing over every page or just finished it the night before.

Temper and Brown is at 12-13 Albion Street, B1 3ED, and the session is free to enter, though there's a catch: you're asked to buy something while you're there, which the organisers describe as a thank you to the venue for hosting. It's a small thing that keeps the club going, and it's a fair trade for a dedicated spot to sit and talk books. Tickets are booked through Eventbrite, and this particular session is already sold out, so if you're looking for a way in, you'll need to keep an eye on the next one. If you've already got your ticket, it's 6pm to 7pm on Thursday 29 October at Temper and Brown.
