Free evening of live literary readings by four Birmingham writers followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
New Writing in Birmingham is on at Temper and Brown on Tuesday 27 October, with four writers from the city's literary scene reading their work live and taking questions from the audience afterwards. The session runs from 7pm to 9.30pm, so it's a full two and a half hours of reading and conversation rather than a quick turn around the room.
Among the four is Amanda Smyth, an Irish Trinidadian author whose debut novel, Black Rock, won the Prix du Premier Roman Γtranger. Malachi McIntosh was born in Birmingham and raised in the US, and wrote the award-winning short-story collection Parables, Fables, Nightmares. Taylor Burns, author of Trav: A Novel, is Voce Books' writer-in-residence for 2025/26 and co-curates STORIE, a Birmingham night for experimental prose. And Alan Beard is a Birmingham short-story writer whose work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and featured in Best British Short Stories.
It's a broad mix of voices to hear in one sitting: a debut novelist with an international prize, a short-story writer who's worked across the Atlantic, a writer-in-residence with a foot in the experimental scene, and a short-story writer whose work has found its way onto the radio. Each will read their work, and the Q&A gives you a chance to ask them about it afterwards.
