Special screening of David Lynch's Dune (1984) at the Thinktank Planetarium.
Thinktank is bringing Dune (1984) to its planetarium on Friday 27 November, as part of its Planetarium Lates series. It's a special screening of David Lynch's take on the Frank Herbert novel, shown in the dome rather than a standard cinema screen, which changes how the whole thing lands.
If you're coming to this one, it's worth remembering which version we're talking about. This is the 1984 film, not the more recent Denis Villeneuve adaptations. Lynch's version has always been the more divisive of the two, known for its surreal imagery and a very particular kind of 80s sci-fi atmosphere that doesn't quite match the polished look of the new ones. Seeing it in a planetarium puts the scale of Arrakis in a different light, too — the dome wraps around you, so the vast deserts and the deep space shots take up more of your field of vision than they would on a flat screen.
It's part of the Planetarium Lates programme, so it's an evening slot rather than a daytime one. The screening is on Friday 27 November at Thinktank in Birmingham, and it's a standalone showing of the film. If you've only seen the newer movies, this is a good chance to see where the cinematic history of the series actually started, and to see Lynch's vision of the spice-rich world for yourself.
