Jim White plays The Kitchen Garden Café in Kings Heath on Tuesday 11 May 2027, with Ben de la Cour opening the night. White is a Southern Gothic singer-songwriter who grew up in Pensacola, Florida, where he spent his early years on the outskirts of a deeply Pentecostal community. He's spent a fair bit of his life working menial jobs, including thirteen years driving a taxi in New York City — it was there he met David Byrne and signed to Byrne's Luaka Bop label.
There was a point when his music seemed like it might not happen. A bandsaw accident maimed his left hand, and for a while it looked like his hopes were over. But a collection of simple songs led to a demo that reached Byrne, and the re-recorded result became his debut, Wrong-Eyed Jesus!, a gathering of atmospheric, oddly spiritual country-folk. Since then he's released seven eclectic albums and six side projects, produced records for other songwriters, exhibited visual art across the US and Europe, and published award-winning fiction.
His production has also found its way into film and television. 'Word-Mule' appeared in the 'Heisenberg' episode of Breaking Bad, and 'Static on the Radio', a duet with Aimee Mann, runs through the closing credits of El Camino. The music he's known for sits in that Southern Gothic territory — sparse, atmospheric, and rooted in the gospel sounds he grew up with in Florida.
