Live folk-punk gig by Stourbridge singer-songwriter Jess Silk with support from Matt Johnson at The Kitchen Garden Cafe.
Jess Silk plays The Kitchen Garden Cafe on Thursday 28 January, with Matt Johnson opening. Silk is a guitarist, singer and songwriter from the Black Country, specifically Stourbridge, and she describes her sound as melodic folk-punk. It's built around an acoustic guitar covered in stickers, heartfelt lyrics and a distinctive, powerful voice.
She's been releasing music for a while now. Her debut album, Break the Bottle, came out in May 2018 at Katie Fitzgerald's in Stourbridge, followed by two self-produced EPs in 2020, If We're Damned and There's A Bar At the End Of the World. Then came the album Blitz Spirit in August 2021, and most recently the EP Old, Broken Isle in April 2025. Between the full-length records and the EPs, there's a fair bit of material to draw from.
She's played festivals like Bearded Theory, Rebellion, Beautiful Days and Glastonbury, where she shared a stage with Billy Bragg, and has opened for the Levellers, New Model Army, Bar Stool Preachers, The Men They Couldn't Hang and Merry Hell. The support act, Matt Johnson, is a Midlands singer/songwriter whose emotive performances cover the full remit of life.
