The eighth Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel, held at the NEC and Sandwell Aquatics Centre.
The Invictus Games are coming to Birmingham from 10 to 17 July 2027, with the NEC and Sandwell Aquatics Centre taking the lead. It's the eighth edition of the Games, and Birmingham won the UK bid ahead of six other cities around the world to host them. The city is presented as a natural home for the event, with its diverse communities and strong Armed Forces network.
To understand what they're about, you have to go back to how they started. Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, came up with the idea after returning from deployment in Afghanistan and visiting the US Warrior Games in 2013. He wanted an international competition that celebrates the unconquered human spirit and shines a spotlight on wounded, injured and sick service personnel. The Games are framed as more than a competition: they're about recovery, resilience and the courage to begin again, turning each competitor's personal journey into a collective movement.

Two venues are doing the heavy lifting here. The NEC is described as the nation's experience capital, built with accessibility at its core, and it'll operate for the first time in Games history as a fully integrated Festival Hub, bringing sport, accommodation and community activity together under one roof. Sandwell Aquatics Centre, which was built for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, will host the swimming in an inclusive environment. Between the two, the Games will run from 10 to 17 July 2027.
