Flamenco-rumba concert by Gipsy Kings by André Reyes, the band led by the original Gipsy Kings founder, at Symphony Hall.
Gipsy Kings by André Reyes play Symphony Hall on Wednesday 4 November, with doors opening at 19:00 and the night running through to 23:00. The bill is led by André Reyes, one of the founding members of the original Gipsy Kings, and he's brought a full band with him: Kakou Reyes on vocals and guitar, Mario Reyes on guitar, Thomas Reyes on vocals and guitar, Canut Reyes on vocals and guitar, Joaquim Amador on bass, Joseph Cortes on drums, Guilherme Alves on percussion, and Fred Bretón on keyboards.
They describe themselves as the successor to the original Gipsy Kings, and as a musical family that's taken the gypsy spirit to stages around the world. The sound is built on flamenco rumba, a style they've kept alive across generations, with each member adding their own dimension to blend the classic with the contemporary. It's a big sound for a big room, and with a line-up like this, there are plenty of guitars and voices on stage at once.
If the name rings a bell but the details are fuzzy, the original Gipsy Kings sold more than 60 million copies, and their flamenco-rumba style, influenced by pop, produced the global hits 'Djobi Djoba', 'Bamboleo' and 'Baila Me'. Their self-titled album Gipsy Kings did particularly well across Europe, especially in France, Italy, England and Spain. They also adapted 'Hotel California' for the soundtrack of The Big Lebowski and recorded a Spanish version of 'You've Got a Friend in Me' for Toy Story 3 back in 2010. André Reyes himself was awarded the SACEM 2012 prize by the French Society of Composers.
