Piano and percussion comedy duo Flo & Joan play live at Birmingham Town Hall.
Flo & Joan play Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday 3 December, with the show starting at 19:30. They're a piano and percussion duo made up of British-born, Toronto-based sisters Nicola and Rosie Dempsey, who write their own songs blending alliteration, political humour and observational comedy. Their stage names come from their grandmother and her sister.
Their set often starts by taking another 'real band's' setlist and ruminating on questions like 'what is music?', 'how do you be a band?' and 'is comedy?' in the sharp-tongued, deadpan way that's become their trademark. It's a good way to get a sense of how they work: they're as much about the commentary around the music as they are about the songs themselves.
They've played to sold-out audiences across North America and internationally, including Montreal Sketchfest, and have appeared on Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance and Comic Relief's Red Nose Day Live 2023. They also have their own comedy special, Alive on Stage, on Amazon Prime. Critics have compared them to the offspring of Flanders & Swann, Flight of the Conchords and Garfunkel & Oates, so you've got a fair idea of the territory they cover.
