CBSO concert with Janáček's 'Taras Bulba', Anna Clyne's saxophone concerto with Jess Gillam and Dvořák's Seventh Symphony, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are at Symphony Hall on Wednesday 10 February 2027, with Music Director Kazuki Yamada on the podium. It's part of the CBSO's 2026-27 season, which pairs major symphonic journeys with new commissions, international touring and bold cross-genre collaborations.
The programme opens with Janáček's Taras Bulba, a folk-inspired rhapsody written during the turbulence of the First World War that depicts battles, thwarted love and a stirring sense of patriotism. It runs for about twenty minutes. Then comes a new work: Anna Clyne's Glasslands, a saxophone concerto with collaborative artist Jess Gillam on saxophone. It's centred on the Irish folkloric figure of the Banshee, and the music conjures up her 'wailing, shrieking, or keening in the silence of the night'. That takes up another twenty-five minutes.
The second half is Dvořák's Symphony No. 7, which runs for thirty-five minutes. If you're arriving early, there's a pre-concert talk with CBSO Composer in Residence Alpesh Chauhan. The whole evening lasts around two hours with a twenty-minute interval, and under-16s need to be accompanied by an adult.
