An eerie and unsettling anthology of tales about the hold our agricultural past exerts over the present day, written and performed by Jonathan Goodwin.
Don't Go Into The Cellar comes to MAC Birmingham on Friday 30 October, a theatre and dance show presented by the Folk Horror company. It's an original piece written and performed by Jonathan Goodwin, who handles both the writing and the performing himself, so it's one man on stage throughout.
Goodwin describes it as an eerie and unsettling anthology of tales that explore the mystical and sometimes threatening hold our agricultural past exerts over the present day. The folk horror angle is right there in the title: it's less about ghosts in the attic and more about the old, rural things that don't quite stay buried. The anthology format means it's a collection of stories rather than one single plot, so you'll be moving through different tales over the course of the night.
It's a theatre and dance show, which puts it somewhere between a play and a performance piece, and the folk horror theme fits the timing—it's ten days before Halloween, so it's a good one to slot into your October plans if you're after something a bit darker than the usual. The whole thing is written and performed by Goodwin, so the voice you hear throughout is his.
