CBSO concert under Kazuki Yamada with wind soloists playing selections from Swan Lake, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and Romeo and Juliet.
Kazuki Yamada leads the CBSO through a programme of three ballet scores at Symphony Hall on Sunday 21 February 2027, starting at 3:00pm. It's a matinee, so you're out well before dark.
The afternoon opens with a 25-minute selection from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, a story of doomed love and betrayal that holds some of his most sorrowful melodies. After that, the focus shifts to Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn, which takes about 30 minutes. It's a refined celebration of wind instruments, and one that still keeps scholars arguing over its origins and whether Mozart actually wrote it. The second half is a 45-minute selection from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, which runs through a wide range of moods, from swagger to swoon to sombre reflection.
Yamada is on conducting duties, and the Mozart piece brings four soloists to the front: Hyun Jung Song on oboe, Oliver Janes on clarinet, Nikolaj Henriques on bassoon and Elspeth Dutch on horn. The whole thing is part of the CBSO's 2026-27 season, and there's a pre-concert performance given by the CBSO Children's Chorus if you want to arrive early and hear them.
