30th anniversary screening of the gay film Beautiful Thing, part of the BFI Rip It Up season and MAC's Here I Am film season.
Beautiful Thing is back on the big screen at MAC Birmingham on Saturday 17 October, marking 30 years since it first came out. It's a 30th anniversary screening of the gay film, and it's part of the BFI's national Rip It Up season.
If you haven't seen it, Beautiful Thing is one of the sweetest gay films out there. It follows two troubled teenagers, Jamie and Ste, who find love in each other's arms on a suburban London estate, and it's carried by a sparky script from Jonathan Harvey. It's a gentle, warm sort of story, and seeing it in a cinema 30 years on feels like a good way to mark the anniversary.
The screening is part of MAC's Here I Am film season, a programme celebrating coming-of-age stories across four decades of cinema, presented in partnership with the BFI. The season was guest-curated by Birmingham-born actor Enva Lewis, who drew on working-class, queer, Black and British Asian coming-of-age stories to focus on the defiance, joy and vulnerability of growing up as a city kid in Britain, following the evolution of UK youth culture over the past 75 years. The whole thing is supported by the National Lottery and the BFI Film Audience Network.
