An interactive family concert by the CBSO featuring space-themed music, dance and audience participation, inspired by Luke Jerram's Helios sculpture.
The CBSO are taking over The Exchange on Saturday 17 October for Adventures in Space, a family concert that does things a bit differently from your usual orchestral afternoon. Instead of sitting still and listening, you're invited to sing, dance and join in with the orchestra, with plenty of chances to get up and move around. They've also put out a call for people to come dressed as their favourite astronaut, alien or star explorer, so if you've got a costume that's been gathering dust, this is a good excuse to bring it out.
The whole thing takes place inside the working cafƩ in the Banking Hall, where food and drink are served, rather than on a formal stage. The day is built around Helios, a vast illuminated sculpture by British artist Luke Jerram that depicts the surface of the sun using NASA imagery. You can take in the piece alongside free book-themed activities around The Exchange, which are running as part of the venue's Booktober season.
It's a space-themed programme, and the interactive side is a big part of it: the music is meant to be joined in with, not just listened to. Between the CBSO performing and the audience singing and dancing along, it's designed as a family outing rather than a quiet recital. The Helios sculpture stays on display throughout, so you can see it before or after the music.
