Folk concert by Toronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell at the Kitchen Garden Cafe.
Abigail Lapell plays the Kitchen Garden Cafe on Sunday 15 November, part of her touring across North America and Europe. She's a Toronto-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and she'll be performing solo, handling vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle guitar herself.
Her music sits in a wide space: she describes it as somewhere between modern folk, 'prairie noir' and 'Canadiana desert rock'. It's a sound that draws on the open landscapes of the Canadian prairies, and she brings that to the stage on her own, switching between instruments throughout the set. The latest record she's touring is Anniversary, which came out in May 2024 on Outside Music.
She's well-regarded back home in Canada, with four Canadian Folk Music Awards to her name, including English Songwriter of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year, and a JUNO nomination for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Her songs have reached number one on Canadian folk radio and gathered tens of millions of streams across digital platforms. The critics have been equally attentive: KUTX/NPR called her 'the best folk artist you haven't yet discovered', and Rolling Stone described Anniversary as 'a disc of pure, impalpable beauty'.
