CBSO concert conducted by Jules Buckley with Quincy Jones' film and television scores, from The Color Purple to Austin Powers.
A Celebration of Quincy Jones comes to Symphony Hall on Saturday 13 February 2027, a CBSO concert that spends the whole evening on the film and television scores of Quincy Jones. It's billed as a night of some of the best soundtracks ever written, a tribute to the creative mind behind them.
Conductor and arranger Jules Buckley is the one leading the night, and he's also the one who's put the programme together. He doesn't hold back on his admiration for Jones, calling him a 'guru' and adding that 'there's no-one that comes close... in terms of being a conductor, composer, arranger, producer, mentor, philanthropist'.
That range comes through in the set, which pulls from very different corners of Jones' work. You'll hear the spirituals of The Color Purple, the bossa nova jazz of The Deadly Affair, and the flower-power vibe of Austin Powers — all in one evening. It's a good way to see just how much ground he covered across his career, from the soulful and the jazzy to the more playful side of things.
