Contemporary dance double bill by Shaymaa Shoukry and Michael McEvoy, part of the 64th Belfast International Arts Festival.
The MAC hosts a dance double bill on Saturday 24 October, bringing together two pieces from different corners of the world on one stage. The first is The Light Within by Shaymaa Shoukry, and the second is Tá Brón Orm by Michael McEvoy. Both are part of 'Our Voice Together Now', a dance exchange between Belfast, Cairo and Palestine, presented with Orient Productions in Egypt and Sareyyet Ramallah in Palestine and funded by a British Council International Collaboration Award.
Shoukry's The Light Within draws on the traditions of the Palestinian dabke, and it comes with an original live score by Ahmed Salah, performed on the night by Besan Ja'ara, Hanin Tarik and Nibal AbuDan. The music weaves together Palestinian and Egyptian traditions, so you'll hear the two cultures meeting in the sound as well as the dance.
McEvoy's Tá Brón Orm takes a different starting point. It begins in an Ireland that never recovered from the Great Famine, drawing on three of his own short tales — The Banshee, The Siren and The Hunger Fields — and inspired by Marita Conlon-McKenna's Children of the Famine trilogy. It's set to the contemporary Irish soundscape of ØXN, and performed by Ahmed Ghareeb, Sara Gabr and Shady Abdelrahman.
