Author Sebastian Barry, joined by Alex Clark, discusses his new novel 'The Newer World' in a live-captioned talk at The MAC, part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Sebastian Barry is at The MAC on Sunday 1 November, talking through his new novel, The Newer World. He's joined by Alex Clark, and the two will spend the hour discussing the book together. It's part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, and there's a live captioned version available if you need it.
If you're not familiar with Barry, he's one of the biggest names in Irish fiction right now. He was Laureate for Irish Fiction from 2018 to 2021 and has won the Costa Book of the Year twice. You might know him from Days Without End or The Secret Scripture, and The Newer World is the latest to come from him.
The new book follows Tennyson Bouguereau — a freed man, a devoted brother, a nascent singer, a conflicted soldier and a wanted man — as he journeys to find meaning and belonging in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The Observer called it "a masterly work of historical witness and moral reckoning", so it's a story that looks back at a specific moment in history while keeping its eye on the human side of it. The talk will be a chance to hear Barry talk through the book and the ideas behind it.

It starts at 4:00pm and runs for an hour, so it's a late-afternoon thing rather than a full evening. Tickets are £8, with a £6 concession available. It's at The MAC, and since it's part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, it's one of the many things on the festival programme that autumn.
