The Blow Monkeys play Limelight in Belfast on their Birdsong tour.
The Blow Monkeys bring their Birdsong tour to Limelight 2 in Belfast on Saturday 31 October. It's their thirteenth studio album, Birdsong, they're out on the road with, released through Creation Youth, the independent label set up by Alan McGee and producer Martin 'Youth' Glover.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, you'll know the songs. They're a British pop-soul band who first emerged in the early eighties and left behind singles like 'Digging Your Scene' and 'It Doesn't Have To Be This Way', plus a cover of 'You Don't Own Me' that ended up on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Frontman Dr Robert also played a part in shaping early UK house music, and over the years the band has collaborated with artists as diverse as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and Lee 'King Rockers' Perry. It's a long run of records behind them, and Birdsong is the latest addition to that list.
There's a bit of a reunion feel to this one, too. Birdsong was recorded at Paul Weller's Black Barn Studios in Surrey, produced by Dr Robert and played by founding members Neville Henry on sax and Mick Anker on bass, with Crispin Taylor on drums. So when they take the stage at Limelight 2, it's the original core of the band back together. They'll be playing through the new material from Birdsong as part of the tour, with the older songs they're known for likely to find their way in alongside it.
