Over-18s night of jazz and electronic music by Tokyo-born Takuya Nakamura at The Limelight, part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Takuya Nakamura plays The Limelight on Friday 30 October, as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. He's the sole bill on the night, and the set sits right where his whole career has lived: halfway between jazz and electronic music.
Nakamura's a producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist who's played trumpet, keyboards and a fair few electronic instruments. He's worked with a wide range of artists, and his name shows up in some cult bands like Jojo's Mayer's Nerve and Cocorosie. He's also played alongside the likes of Quincy Jones, David Byrne and Arto Lindsay. The common thread is a career spent blending deep jazz roots with cutting-edge electronic production, and this show is a continuation of that.
To get how he works, it helps to look back a bit. Originally from Tokyo, he moved to the US in 1990 to study under the jazz theorist and composer George Russell at the New England Conservatory of Music. By 1994 he'd settled in New York, where he became a fixture of the city's jazz and jungle scenes. That's a specific kind of crossover — the structured, improvisational side of jazz meeting the breakbeats and bass of jungle — and it's the same territory he's still working in now.
