Triple-bill dance show by Luail with works by Akram Khan, Oona Doherty and Liz Roche, part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Luail are at The MAC on 6 and 7 November with Nōs, a dance triple-bill that's part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. The title comes from the Latin for 'us', and the night brings together three works from three different choreographers, all performed by the same company.
The first is Akram Khan's Kaash, which first went out in 2002. It's rooted in the rhythmic complexity of his classical background, staged with a poetic set by Anish Kapoor and a score by Nitin Sawhney. Then comes Oona Doherty's Lazarus (2016), a raw, confrontational piece that looks at masculinity, socio-economic stereotypes and rebirth — it won her a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2021. The bill rounds off with two pieces from Liz Roche's 12 Minute Dances (2009), set to music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe and inspired by Mark Rothko's belief that art 'lives by companionship'.
Luail is Ireland's national all-island dance company, and they're the ones bringing these three together on one stage. The cast is Robyn Byrne, Jou-Hsin Chu, Clara Kerr, Sean Lammer, Tom O'Gorman, Hamza Pirimo, Rosie Stebbing and Meghan Stevens. The set is by Alyson Cummins, lighting by Sinead Wallace and costumes by Catherine Fay.
