Screening of the animated film 'Loving Vincent' introduced by associate producer Cleone Clarke, followed by a discussion.
Loving Vincent is screening at the Ulster Museum on Sunday 18 October, with an introduction and a discussion to follow. It's part of the 37th Cinemagic Festival, the award-winning film charity and leading film and television festival for young people in the UK and Ireland, run in association with Belfast City Airport and supported by industry patrons including Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan.
If you haven't seen it, Loving Vincent is a bit of a feat: it's hand-painted entirely in oils. The story starts a year after Vincent van Gogh's death, when a postman's son travels to deliver the artist's final letter and uncovers a complex life along the way. The animation brings Van Gogh's masterpieces to life, so the film looks like his paintings moving on screen. It's a slow-burn of a thing, and the oil-on-canvas style is its whole point.
The screening is introduced by associate producer Cleone Clarke, who'll draw on her behind-the-scenes experience to explain how that visual style came together over a seven-year journey. After the film, there's a discussion, and the session also touches on the artist's final days. It's a good way to see the film and then hear about how it was actually made from someone who was there.
