Six-week sewing course for improvers to learn pattern cutting and garment creation with Bernie Carlin, for those who have moved beyond the beginner classes.
Bernie Carlin is running an improvers sewing course at The Duncairn in North Belfast, starting Wednesday 4 November. It's a six-week run that goes through to Wednesday 9 December, with sessions from 6pm to 8pm each week.
It's designed as the next step for anyone who's moved beyond the absolute beginners classes The Duncairn has run. Over the six weeks, you'll work through sewing patterns and cutting skills to make a simple garment, and pick up the confidence to alter your own clothes. The course covers how to cut and pin fabric using a simple pattern, sewing and finishing straight seams, inserting a zip, finishing a waistline, and reading sewing pattern symbols. Patterns are provided, though you can bring your own if you've already got something in mind. Sewing machines are limited, so if you have one, you're asked to bring it along.
The course sits alongside the centre's wider programme of classes, which includes beginner Irish, beginner crochet and beginner watercolours. The Duncairn itself has been putting arts at the heart of North Belfast since 2014, working as an arts centre, concert venue, theatre and gallery in the city's Cultural Quarter, with a particular focus on live folk, acoustic and traditional Irish music.

It costs £60 for the full six weeks, and materials are included except for the fabric for your final garment. That's the one thing you'll need to sort yourself.
