Screening of the horror film 'Hokum' with a live commentary by director Damian McCarthy and editor Brian Philip Davis at The Black Box, for ages 18 and over.
Damian McCarthy and Brian Philip Davis are taking over The Black Box on Friday 30 November for a live commentary of Hokum. McCarthy directed the film, and Davis edited it, so they're the two people who know it inside out. Rather than just sitting through the screening in silence, you'll have them talking through it as it plays, picking apart the scenes and the choices they made along the way.
Hokum follows Ohm Bauman, an arrogant American novelist played by Adam Scott, who travels to Ireland to scatter his parents' ashes. He stays at the same Irish inn where they spent their honeymoon, and while he spends his time getting drunk and annoying the locals, he becomes entranced by folk tales of a witch trapped in the hotel. From there he's drawn into the mysteries and horrors beneath the surface, alongside some disturbing secrets from his own suppressed past.
McCarthy is an Irish horror director who's built a name for himself with Caveat and Oddity, and he's in town for the 26th Belfast Film Festival, which runs from 29 October to 7 November. This screening is part of that programme, and since it's a horror, it's for ages 18 and over. Having the director and editor there to talk through it makes it a bit different from your usual cinema trip — you get to hear how the thing actually came together rather than just watching it.
