Free, family-friendly guided tour of the Ulster Museum's natural science galleries that reads the history of Ireland through its landscape and wildlife, with object handling.
From Grey Wolves to Grey Squirrels is a guided tour through the natural science galleries at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, running on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February 2027 from 14:00 to 15:00. It's part of the NI Science Festival, and the whole thing is free.
The tour reads the history of the island of Ireland through its landscape and wildlife, tracing how humans have shaped and been shaped by the environment across Irish history. You travel through time, searching for signs of species long extinct before tracking animals that still live in the wild. The journey finishes with some investigative work in the museum's research classroom, so it's more of a walk-and-talk than a static tour.
Along the way, the story is told through native plants and animals—bears and cranes, pine trees and grey squirrels—and the group gets to handle specimens from the museum's handling collection, which is the best part if you're the type who prefers touching things to just looking at them. It's suitable for ages six and up, and children under twelve need to be accompanied by an adult.
