Directing masterclass with horror director Damian McCarthy, moderated by Clare Monnelly, at The Black Box as part of the Belfast Film Festival's Long Short Weekend.
Damian McCarthy is coming to The Black Box on Friday 30 October for a directing masterclass, moderated by Clare Monnelly. It's part of the Belfast Film Festival's Long Short Weekend, and it's sponsored by Northern Ireland Screen.
McCarthy is the director behind the horror films Caveat, Oddity and Hokum, the latter starring Adam Scott. He started out with short films that screened and won awards at festivals around the world, and his feature debut Caveat came out in 2020, went onto Shudder and became a worldwide sensation. Oddity followed in 2024. Even with that rise, his work keeps a deeply Irish sensibility — darkly humorous and well-versed in folklore.
The masterclass will pull from that whole trajectory: he'll show some of his early shorts, clips from his features, and the work that inspired him. It's as much about where he started as where he's gone since.
