Two-hour creative workshop for teenagers and adults to make their own lampshade cover from natural materials, with materials and snacks provided.
Golden Thread Gallery is running a lantern-making workshop on Saturday 28 November, from 1 pm to 3 pm. It's held in The Hub, the gallery's community and engagement space at 23-29 Queen Street in Belfast, and it's aimed at teenagers and adults, so it works whether you're coming on your own or bringing a younger relative along.
The session is led by Isabel and the gallery's volunteers, and the whole point is to make a lampshade cover to take home. You'll be working with natural materials, gelli plate printing, PVA pasting and wet strength tissue paper. Each shade has three panels, which gives you a bit of room to tell a story across them: leaf imprints made with gelli plate printing on one, and a stained-glass-inspired design in coloured tissue paper on the others. It's a two-hour session, and you leave with something finished and ready to use.
One of the best things about it is that you don't need to bring anything. All the materials are provided, and they've got snacks and drinks on hand, so you can just turn up and get stuck in. It's part of the gallery's wider workshops collection, and since it's run out of The Hub, it's more of a community thing than a formal class. If you've never tried gelli printing or working with tissue paper before, that's fine — Isabel and the volunteers are there to walk you through it.
