Family-friendly guided tour of the Nature Galleries and a hands-on colour workshop for mini art lovers aged 6 to 11, part of the NI Science Festival 2027.
Creating Colour in Art is on at the Ulster Museum on Friday 12 February, from 14:00 to 15:00. It's part of the NI Science Festival 2027, and it's aimed at mini art lovers aged 6 to 11, so it's one to bring the kids along to if you're around the city that afternoon.
The session starts with a family-friendly guided tour of the museum's Nature Galleries, where the group looks at the collections through the lens of colour. It's not just a walk-through, though — the kids get to handle objects as they go, which is always the best bit of a museum visit. From there, the tour leads into a colour workshop where they find out how artists made their colours in the past, rather than just buying a tube of paint from a shop.
Inside the workshop, they make their own cardboard artist palette board, grind their own minerals, and mix paints to create their own unique colours. It's a proper hands-on hour: they'll be working with raw materials to see how the pigments they're using actually come together. By the time it's over, they'll have a palette they've put together themselves.
