River Tall Theatre Company's historical play about the love story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford set against the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.
River Tall Theatre Company are bringing Blood Upon the Rose to The Grand Opera House from Tuesday 19 January to Saturday 23 January 2027. It's a musical drama about Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford, set against the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916. Plunkett was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and was executed in the 'Stonebreaker's yard' the morning after marrying Grace in Kilmainham Gaol; their romance was later immortalised in the song of the same name.
The play doesn't stop at the love story, though. It follows Plunkett's part in the rising and his relationships with leaders like Pearse, McDonagh, Clarke and Connolly. The company describes it as a historical masterpiece that brings to life the divisions in Irish revolutionary thinking, so it's as much about the politics of the time as it is about the couple at its centre. It's written and produced by Gerry Cunningham, and the production has toured the UK and Ireland, with a US tour also in the works.
This is a return to Belfast for the show, which played the Grand Opera House almost seven years ago. It's recommended for ages 12 and up, and there's a signed performance on Thursday 21 January at 7:30pm.
