BlackGate, the contemporary music project of Caimin Gilmore, plays Crescent Arts Centre with cellist Kate Ellis, harpist Lavinia Meijer and double bassist Caimin Gilmore.
BlackGate play the Crescent Arts Centre on Friday 30 October, as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. It's a trio led by Caimin Gilmore, the Irish double-bassist from Crash Ensemble, and he's joined on stage by cellist Kate Ellis and harpist Lavinia Meijer.
BlackGate is Gilmore's own project, and the music draws from contemporary music, pop, classical and folk. The trio's self-titled debut album came out in 2025 through New Amsterdam in the US and Ten Spot in Ireland, and it's been well received. The music had its world premiere at the Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2024, and since then it's been performed at the New Music Dublin Festival, the PS21 Chatham Groundtone Festival, Phoenix Gallery in Vermont and The Bridge Studios in Brooklyn. This is one of its Belfast appearances.
The show is presented by Moving on Music in association with the Belfast International Arts Festival 2026. The critics have had a few words to say about it: The Wire called it 'elegantly choreographed' and The Guardian described it as a 'triumph of tonality and sonorities'.
