One-man show in which R M Lloyd Parry performs two of M R James's ghost stories, 'Canon Alberic's Scrap-book' and 'The Mezzotint'.
R M Lloyd Parry brings A Pleasing Terror to the Lyric Theatre in Belfast from Tuesday 17 to Sunday 22 November. It's a one-man show retelling two ghost stories by M R James, adapted and directed by Parry himself.
James's ghost stories still terrify and amuse more than a century after they were first published, and this production pulls two of his earliest and eeriest tales. The first is Canon Alberic's Scrap-book, in which a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees. The second is The Mezzotint, where a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art before the helpless eyes of an Oxford museum curator. Both stories lean on James's particular brand of dread: the sort that starts with a dusty book or a piece of art and ends with something far more sinister than you expected.
The show is part of Nunkie Productions' M R James Project, which brings James's stories to the stage alongside H P Lovecraft's Gallery of Screams and H G Wells' The Time Machine. It's a one-man retelling, so it's just Parry on stage bringing these two tales to life.
