Museum Day with activations, crafts, genealogy workshops, a pop-up exhibit and a new window installation honoring George Washington Carver.
Museum Day 2026 comes to the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center on Sunday, September 20, from 10 AM to 4 PM. It's part of the citywide Austin Museum Day, which the Austin Museum Partnership has coordinated since 1998 to bring free admission and special programming to museums across town.
The day's lineup has a few different things going on at once. The Carver Education team will have activations and crafts running, and the Genealogy Center will host Family Tree workshops for anyone tracing their roots. There's also a pop-up exhibit celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of Torch Literary Arts, and the unveiling of a new window installation honoring the life of George Washington Carver.
If you haven't spent much time there, the museum preserves and exhibits African American material culture, history, and aesthetic expression, with the goal of celebrating the global contributions of all Black people. Admission is always free and open to the public. Inside, you'll find two rotating art galleries and four permanent exhibits honoring African Americans, along with a Genealogy Center that provides free genealogy databases, workshops, and seminars. The site also rents out the Boyd Vance Theatre and an indoor atrium space.

Right now, the museum is showing Seeing Further, a solo exhibition by Hakeem Adewumi that runs from May 14 to October 10, 2026, so you can catch that alongside the Museum Day programming. The event runs from 10 AM to 4 PM on Sunday, September 20, at 1165 Angelina Street, and admission is free.
