Musical adaptation of the beloved children's book by Arnold Lobel, following the friendship of Frog and Toad through the seasons.
A Year with Frog and Toad opens at the Scottish Rite Theater on Saturday, April 17, 2027, and runs through Sunday, May 9, with performances on Saturdays and Sundays throughout. It's a musical adaptation of Arnold Lobel's children's book, with book and lyrics by Willie Reale and music by Robert Reale, presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
The show follows two best friends through the changing seasons—planting gardens, swimming, raking leaves, and going sledding—and picking up life lessons along the way. It's described as part vaudeville and part make-believe, and it celebrates the differences that make each of them unique and special. The whole thing runs about 60 minutes and is recommended for Pre-K through 5th grade, so it's a good length for younger kids who might struggle with a full-length production.
It's being put on by the Scottish Rite Community and Children's Theater, which is a bit of an Austin landmark: the city's oldest theater and the oldest west of the Mississippi, with a fully operational modern stage housed in a building that dates back to 1871. If you've never been, it's at 207 West 18th Street.
