A comedic reimagining of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, presented by Crown Theatre and the Austin Scottish Rite Theater, where a ragtag troupe attempts to stage the classic on a shoestring budget.
Crown Theatre is taking over the Scottish Rite Theater for A Christmas Carol Catastrophe!, a comedic reimagining of Charles Dickens' classic that runs from November 27 through December 20. It's a co-production with the theater itself, and the whole thing is appropriate for all audiences, so it works as a family outing.
The story is told through the eyes of a ragtag troupe of performers who set out to stage the most profound production of A Christmas Carol on a shoestring budget. From there, it all goes sideways: the venue is double-booked, the stage manager has to double up as Bob Cratchit, and the actor playing Ebenezer Scrooge fails to show, forcing the director himself into the role. The show follows the troupe as they pull it together, discovering that love, hope and friendship are some of the most beautiful blessings, no matter the time of year.
Behind the scenes, the play was written by Trey Deason and directed by Tobie Minor. The venue is the Scottish Rite Theater at 207 West 18th St, home of the Scottish Rite Community and Children's Theatre. The building dates back to 1869 and still keeps vintage scenery on its stage, which fits the vibe of a production that's supposed to be falling apart around the edges.
