75th anniversary screening of the classic film A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Elia Kazan, starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh, as part of the Paramount Theatre's Summer Classic Film Series.
The State Theatre is screening A Streetcar Named Desire on Saturday, August 1, as part of the Paramount Theatre's 52nd annual Summer Classic Film Series. It's the 75th anniversary of the 1951 film, which runs 122 minutes in black and white.
Directed by Elia Kazan, the movie is an adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play. It stars Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden, with a score by Alex North. For Brando, it was his first major movie role, and it's the one where he famously screams his wife's name so loudly it still echoes today. The film brought the Broadway story to the screen and launched his career.
This screening is part of a larger summer program that's become a bit of an Austin tradition. The series is organized into themed blocks, including a Hitchcock Month and a Family Film Series. This year, though, it carries a bittersweet note: the Paramount Theatre is closing temporarily for a long-overdue restoration, so the series has moved to other venues, with Streetcar playing at the State Theatre and other screenings held at the Bullock Museum's IMAX Theatre.
