Premiere of Wil Kelly's feature film, which explores human connection and vulnerability.
Queen Takes Bishop premieres at Hyperreal Film Club on Saturday, September 12, at 7:30 PM. It's the first feature film from Austin director Wil Kelly, starring Darren Benjamin and Natalie Joy. The story follows a retired professor who hires a sex worker—not for intimacy, but simply to have someone to talk to—and from there it works its way through interpersonal relationships and vulnerability.
Kelly moved to Austin from Nashville about five years ago and assembled a small crew of longtime collaborators from both Tennessee and Texas to bring the project together. The team shot on location around the city in 2022, so there's a local footprint to the production. Richard Linklater, founder of the Austin Film Society, was involved as executive producer, and Kelly has worked with him before. Kelly describes the film as one that invites audiences to question their assumptions about loneliness and empathy.
