Hands-on training workshop for aspiring XPT project directors, covering practical skills such as volunteer engagement, rehearsal techniques, time management, and puppeteering.
The Center for Puppetry Arts is hosting the XPT New Director Workshop on Tuesday, November 3, a hands-on training session for anyone looking to direct a project for XPT. It runs from 7 PM to 9 PM at 1404 Spring St. NW, and it's open to current and former directors as well as past participants.
To get why this matters, it helps to know what XPT is. Xperimental Puppetry Theater has spent more than 40 years as a platform for artists to take creative risks, test new ideas, and push the boundaries of puppet theater. Every spring, dozens of emerging and established artists come together to create original short works, which are then presented as part of a weekend festival celebrating innovation, experimentation, and artistic discovery. If you've ever wanted to get a piece into that festival, this is where you start.
The workshop is led by current and former XPT directors and past participants, so you're learning from people who have actually been through the process. They'll give you an inside look at how a project comes together and cover the practical skills you'll need to manage one: keeping volunteers engaged, rehearsing with proxies, time management, communication, and puppeteering. It's less about the theory and more about the actual work of getting a puppet piece from an idea to the stage.
