Reception and open house for Karen Duncan Pape's solo show 'Leavings', her chlorophyll prints on tree leaves, at the Maloof Gallery of the Atlanta Photography Group.
Karen Duncan Pape is showing Leavings at the Atlanta Photography Group this fall, with a reception and open house on Thursday, October 15, from 7 to 9 PM. The exhibition runs from October 13 through November 6 at the Maloof Gallery, 1544 Piedmont Ave NE, #107, in Atlanta.
The series grew out of Pape's research into her ancestors and genetic memory. She made chlorophyll prints on tree leaves indigenous to the valley where her family lived for 200 years, then photographed them as they dried and disintegrated over several months. Those photographs are arranged into scrolls of five images each, and the final prints are archival pigment inks on Hahnemuhle Rag Baryta or Hemp. It's a slow process—the images themselves are records of things breaking down over time.
Pape lives and works in the south of the United States. She retired from a business career in 2019 to pursue photography, and Leavings is the group's 13th solo show at the Maloof Gallery. She's currently enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program in Visual Arts at Maine Media in Rockport, Maine; her recent projects include De-Circulated, a work on banned books.
