A comprehensive survey of the work of American artist Martin Puryear, exploring his five-decade career through drawings, sculptures and installations.
Martin Puryear is on display at the High Museum of Art through January 17, 2027. The exhibition is called Nexus, and it's the most comprehensive survey of his career in more than twenty years. It's a big one: more than 70 works on view, and it's the third and final stop of the tour, which was co-organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Cleveland Museum of Art. The High's version is expanded to include additional works, including a rare installation that's only been exhibited three times before.
Puryear is an American artist, born in Washington, DC, in 1941, and he's been working since the 1970s. His pieces draw on global culture, social history, and the natural world, and Nexus follows his exploration of form, material, and process over more than five decades. The range is wide: you'll see drawings he made in Sierra Leone during his Peace Corps service alongside the sculptures of Liberty/Libertà, the installation he created for the U.S. Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. It's a long look back across his whole career, from those early drawings to his most recent work.

Now 85, Puryear was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2011. Nexus is free for members and museum pass holders; for everyone else, admission is $23.50. It runs through January 17, 2027, so there's plenty of time to catch it.
