Meet heritage-breed sheep and goats at Smith Farm; Brett Bannor demonstrates their agility and shares their personalities.
Brett Bannor is hosting Greet the Sheep and Goats at the Atlanta History Center on Friday, Oct 23, at 11 AM. It's part of a series that also ran on Oct 9 and Oct 16, so this is the last one of the set.
For this one, you leave the museum behind and head out to the 19th-century Smith Farm, where the History Center keeps its flock of heritage-breed sheep and goats. Bannor is the Manager of Animal Collections, and he spends the session showing off how agile the animals can be—hopping up onto a barrel and following instructions in hopes of earning a special peanut treat. While they're working, he walks you through their daily routines and their very different personalities, so you get a sense of who's who in the flock rather than just seeing them as a group.
If you're into the history side of things, you can bring along a copy of Bannor's book, American Sheep: A Cultural History, and have him sign it. It's available in the gift shop if you don't already have it. Capacity is limited, so it's a smaller group than a typical museum visit.
